In 2009, a fire destroyed 16 row homes on the 700 block of Chestnut Street. Fourteen have been built back.
Seven members of the JLS Automation team spent a day on site with York Habitat for Humanity, installing flooring and tile in the Chestnut Street homes.
About 4,000 volunteer hours go into each of these houses. Our day was a small piece of one of them — which is how every Habitat home gets built.
Families selected by York Habitat complete homeownership education, put in 225 volunteer hours per adult, and buy the house with a 0% mortgage, with payments starting at 30% of their income. They help build it and they pay for it.
Thank you to York Habitat for Humanity for having us. Supporting the community where our people live and work matters to us, and this was a good way to do it — seven pairs of hands, one day, on a house someone is going to live in.

York Habitat is approaching 150 homes completed in York County since 1985. Volunteer labor takes roughly $85,000 off the cost of each house — a large part of what makes them affordable for the families who buy them.

A little flooring, a little tile, and a lot of time on our knees.
Seven members of the JLS team spent a day on Chestnut Street with York Habitat for Humanity, helping finish floors in the homes going up there.
Here's the part worth knowing: a 2009 fire destroyed 16 row homes on that block. Habitat has been rebuilding it since 2018, and 14 new homes have gone up in their place. Each one takes about 4,000 volunteer hours.
The families who move in take homeownership classes, put in 225 volunteer hours per adult, and buy the house with a 0% mortgage.
Thank you to York Habitat for Humanity for having us out. Supporting our own community matters to us — and this was a good day's work.

Needs a decision
- Are these the final homes on the block?
Your draft said “the final group.” Press reported Phase 3 broke ground on the final four in June 2025, due to finish that summer — a year before the team was on site. I removed “final”; one question to your Habitat contact restores it.
