The problem we have here in Pennsylvania is the same problem we have around the country - how do we get our younger generation with talents in Math and Science involved in a career in Manufacturing? Awareness!
Created by the Manufacturers Resource Center (MRC), What's So Cool About Manufacturing? is an annual contest encouraging students to explore different manufacturing careers, profiling companies all throughout Pennsylvania. Each team of students and teachers receives camera equipment, software, and professional guidance as they produce, record and edit their video own stories.
A prototype and training modules are provided as a guide. Working with their teacher/coach, each team will produce a 1-2-minute video program to present at the Da Vinci Science Center. Student work is acknowledged by awards in many categories. With a contest-like atmosphere, excitement levels are high with the students.
Last fall, JLS® hosted four middle school students from York Suburban School District. By no coincidence, JLS President Craig Souser graduated from there! The students spent the day interviewing employees, learning about JLS products and capturing video footage. Over the winter months, each student team edited and produced their video. In February, JLS was invited to attend the awards ceremony. York Suburban took home the two top awards of the evening – Outstanding Overall Program and Viewer’s Choice, which moved them on to the state finals. The students did not place at states but their enthusiasm about JLS and the event made the whole experience a lot of fun!
