Case packing frozen beef patty stacks at more than 1,000 patties per minute — sensor-based non-vision delta robotics with pneumatically actuated mechanical grippers.

Why Patty Hawk

More than 1,000 patties a minute, off the frozen line.

The Patty Hawk automates high-speed case packing of frozen IQF hamburger patty stacks — running at more than 1,000 patties per minute, consistently loading stacks into corrugated or poly-lined cases while reducing manual handling. The shape, separation, and surface quality IQF delivers stay intact all the way into the case.

It holds that speed because the process stays simple. Frozen stacks arrive upright and consistent, sensor-based detection confirms each stack is in position, and pneumatically actuated mechanical grippers hold each rigid stack square as a unit through the move. Vision-guided picking earns its place on variable, randomly presented product; here the product is uniform and the environment is hard on optics — frost, condensation, washdown — so programmed positions with presence sensing are the more robust fit. Every Patty Hawk is configured around your round patty geometry, stack count, and case format.

The Challenge

Cold, wet packing is where lines break down — and the system built to fix it.

✕The Problem

Cold, wet packing is hard to staff — and harder to keep consistent

One of the toughest jobs in the plant, every shift — capping throughput and wearing crews down.

Cold, wet packing positions are among the hardest in the plant to staff and keep staffed — PPE, fatigue, and turnover all run higher. Rigid frozen stacks punish inconsistent handling, and when case packing falls behind the freezer discharge, the whole line slows to the speed of its hardest job.

Core Technology

The engineering behind the precision.

The Patty Hawk is engineered around one job: clearing frozen patty stacks off the freezer line at speed. Every detail — the stainless steel full-washdown frame, the sensor-based non-vision delta robotics, the pneumatically actuated mechanical grippers — is specified for cold, wet production environments, where speed and reliability decide whether the line keeps moving.

Application Example · JLS Patty Hawk Frozen Patty Case Packing

The frozen line kept getting faster. Case packing had to catch up.

A large US beef processor running a high-volume frozen patty line needed case packing that could keep pace with the freezer discharge. The existing packing process had become the bottleneck — the line ran at high speed with multiple SKUs and required a system that could operate continuously in a cold, wet environment. JLS engineered and installed a Patty Hawk delta robotic case packing system. The sensor-based, non-vision design suited the uniform frozen stacks and the cold, wet environment, pneumatically actuated mechanical grippers secured every stack before placement, and the hygienic washdown construction held up to daily caustic cleaning. The system was packing product on day one and ramped to full rate during commissioning.

Frozen patty case packing FAQs.

Common questions about frozen patty formats, throughput, sensor-based robotics, sanitation, integration, testing, and ROI.

Pricing varies by configuration, throughput target, and case format, and is confirmed during the proposal process. Most JLS Patty Hawk projects evaluate payback in the 24–36 month range, depending on labor cost, shift schedule, line speed, uptime improvement, and the specific application. Labor savings scale with the platform, line speed, and labor model, with added value from improved throughput and more consistent product handling. JLS reviews your product, package format, line speed, staffing model, and current production challenges to determine where a Patty Hawk creates the strongest return.

Speed. Proven at more than 1,000 patties per minute, the Patty Hawk automates high-speed case packing of frozen IQF hamburger patty stacks, consistently loading stacks into corrugated or poly-lined cases while reducing manual handling. It holds that speed because the process stays simple: sensor-based detection on uniform, consistently presented stacks, and pneumatically actuated mechanical grippers that hold each rigid stack square as a unit — so it runs reliably in cold, wet conditions.

Yes. The Patty Hawk is built for the cold, wet, frozen-product environment downstream of a spiral freezer. The specific operating conditions for your line are confirmed during the proposal process. The Patty Hawk is full-washdown construction with an IP69K-rated delta robot for high-pressure caustic washdown. IP69K refers to the rating of selected components, not the complete machine. Contact JLS for details specific to your facility and product.

The Patty Hawk is proven on frozen IQF hamburger patty stacks; poultry, pork, and plant-based round patties are reviewed per application, since softer or differently formed product can call for different tooling. End-of-arm pneumatically actuated mechanical gripper tooling is configured to your specific patty geometry, diameter, thickness, and stack count during the engineering phase. Multiple SKUs are supported with recipe-based changeover on the HMI — operators select the new product recipe and change end-of-arm tooling, without tools where the application allows. Changeover time depends on the application.

The Patty Hawk is engineered to receive frozen patty stacks from patty forming, portioning, and spiral-freezer discharge equipment; compatibility is determined by the application and agreed interfaces. JLS engineers its defined scope — mechanical interface, controls communication, and line timing with your upstream equipment — and coordinates the agreed interfaces with third-party case erecting, sealing, and labeling downstream. The goal is a connected line, not a standalone island requiring manual handoff.

The Patty Hawk automates repetitive case-packing tasks that have become increasingly difficult to staff. Cold, wet packing positions are among the hardest to staff and keep staffed, which is often what drives the project, before accounting for throughput improvement and reduced product damage from inconsistent manual stacking.

Patty Hawk projects commonly evaluate payback in the 24–36 month range, depending on the line. Payback is typically driven by the repetitive packing tasks automated, the throughput gained, and the simplicity of a sensor-based system on uniform product. JLS provides an engineering-led line assessment that includes a detailed ROI projection specific to your operation.

Yes. Many plants start with a single Patty Hawk, prove the ROI, and then extend automation — JLS specifies third-party case erecting and sealing into the plan and coordinates the agreed interfaces. Head count is selected during system design, so share future rate targets up front. For plants ready to automate more of the packaging floor, JLS offers integrated line projects that combine JLS-built automation with coordinated third-party equipment.

Yes, subject to project scope and availability. JLS Flight Lab can test product samples, or a close proxy, on real JLS robotics in York, PA — establishing gripper tooling, pick method, and stack and pack pattern feasibility during the pre-sale process. Rate and performance are validated during the project FAT before shipment, with final commissioning completed at your facility.

Yes. The Patty Hawk’s delta robot carries an IP69K rating — engineered for high-pressure caustic washdown and daily sanitation in cold, wet frozen-patty environments. IP69K refers to the rating of selected components, not the complete machine. Tell us your washdown regime and we’ll confirm the construction details for your application.

To scope a Patty Hawk system, JLS typically reviews your product type and dimensions, photos or video of the current line, package format, target speeds, SKU mix, labor model, sanitation requirements, available floor space, and the main production problem to solve. Clear application detail up front makes it easier to recommend the right configuration and estimate scope.
