Robotic cartoning systems — integrated form-load-close and robotic carton loading

Formed, loaded, closed.
Cartoning with extreme accuracy.

Form. Load. Close. In one integrated monoblock. The Peregrine IS combines robotic carton forming, loading, and closing in one of the smallest cartoning footprints in the category — with patent-pending PBT Positive Board Transport, JLS TRAK carton handling, and patent-pending PCT Positive Carton Transport keeping every carton under control. One control architecture, built, programmed, and supported by JLS.

Already running carton forming and closing equipment? The Peregrine adds vision-guided robotic carton loading to it. Either way, engineered for operational certainty — predictable commissioning and repeatable performance.

Robots + carton forming & closing (Peregrine IS)

JLS robotic cartoning systems load food products into top-load cartons at line speed with vision-guided delta robots and JLS-engineered tooling. There are two paths. The Peregrine IS is an integrated monoblock that robotically forms, loads, and closes cartons — configurable with 1–4 forming heads, 1–3 loading robots, and 1–4 closing heads — in one of the smallest cartoning footprints in the category. The Peregrine performs vision-guided robotic carton loading alongside separate or existing carton forming and closing equipment, scaling to as many as 10 robots. Downstream, JLS case packers such as the Hawk pack finished cartons into shipping cases. Every system is engineered, programmed, and supported by JLS in York, PA, for food manufacturers operating under applicable USDA/FSIS or FDA requirements.

Why JLS for cartoning

Cartoning re-engineered
around space, speed, and integration.

Some cartoning lines split forming, loading, and closing across separate machines, separate controls, and separate vendors. The Peregrine IS consolidates that process into a single integrated monoblock — designed to fit where conventional multi-machine cartoning layouts can't. And when your carton forming and closing equipment already works, the Peregrine brings vision-guided robotic loading to it.

Two cartoning paths — the integrated Peregrine IS monoblock, or standalone robotic carton loading for lines with separate or existing carton equipment — plus Hawk case packing downstream once cartons are filled and closed. Start with what your line needs — the system architecture follows from there. Package format matters more than food category: tell us whether product arrives flow-wrapped, bagged, thermoformed, or unwrapped, and how consistent the presentation is.

Need more than just cartoning?

Cartoning is one step in the chain. JLS coordinates the Peregrine IS or Peregrine with your upstream and downstream equipment through agreed interfaces — including full-line builds with our partner Reiser and with the other qualified suppliers your project requires.

JLS + Reiser integrated systems

From primary loading through case packing — one coordinated line.

For complete line builds, JLS owns its defined automation scope — primary product handling, cartoning, and case packing — and works with Reiser and the other equipment suppliers on your project to define and coordinate every interface. Third-party case erecting, case sealing, and palletizing are specified and coordinated in, so the line is engineered to run as one coordinated system.

Proof before commitment

JLS Flight Lab puts your application on JLS cartoning equipment in York, PA. Send product samples and your carton spec — or a close proxy, subject to project scope and availability — and JLS application engineers test tooling, pick method, and carton fit so feasibility is established before the design is finalized. Rate — and, on the Peregrine IS, the full form-load-close cycle — is validated during FAT on your system, with final confirmation at commissioning where upstream conditions can’t be simulated.

Robotic cartoning FAQs.

Common questions about cartoning formats, sanitation, integration, testing, and ROI.

Cost depends on the platform (Peregrine IS or Peregrine), robot and head count, carton format, and integration scope — it's confirmed during the proposal process after JLS reviews your product, carton format, and line speed. Across JLS automation projects, payback is commonly evaluated in the 24–36 month range, depending on labor cost, shift schedule, line speed, and uptime improvement, and JLS models it with your numbers.

Robotic cartoning uses robots to place product into cartons — and, on an integrated system like the JLS Peregrine IS, to form, load, and close them — at line speed with consistent placement. Both JLS cartoners use vision-guided delta robots: the Peregrine IS combines forming, loading, and closing in one monoblock, while the Peregrine performs robotic carton loading alongside separate or existing carton forming and closing equipment. Once cartons are closed, JLS case packers such as the Hawk — a non-vision, sensor-based system — can pack them into shipping cases. For product that arrives touching or overlapping, JLS Vision AI is available with select JLS robotic systems.

Cartons: top-load paperboard cartons sized to your product and pack pattern, including glue and lock-style tri-seal cartons on the Peregrine IS. Products going in: flow-wrapped packs, bagged product, and other primary packages, confirmed per application. Send JLS your carton spec and how your product is packaged, and tooling and pack pattern are configured to match.

It depends on the system. The Peregrine IS is engineered as one of the smallest-footprint robotic cartoners available, because forming, loading, and closing share one monoblock — built to fit tight end-of-line spaces where a traditional cartoner won't. The Peregrine loader has a space-saving footprint versus traditional mechanical cartoning and sizes with its robot count. JLS provides a layout drawing for your line during the application assessment.

Throughput depends on the product, carton format, robot configuration, and tooling. JLS sizes the system around your actual product, SKU mix, line speed, and packaging equipment so it is built for the production requirement rather than a generic rate claim. For reference, the Peregrine IS runs 120+ cartons per minute in four-carton configurations, and the Peregrine scales with robot count, up to 10 robots.

JLS systems use recipe-driven changeover through the HMI, with tooling and format changes designed to be as simple and repeatable as possible. JLS reviews your SKU mix, carton sizes, and changeover goals so the system is designed around how the plant runs.

Yes, where the application calls for it. Cartoning usually runs after product is sealed, often in a separate packaging room, so JLS matches construction to that environment: Peregrine IS and Peregrine systems use hygienic, cleanable stainless construction, with IP69K-rated* components specified when your sanitation program requires washdown. The Hawk, which case packs finished cartons downstream, is built with IP65-rated components for packaging-room environments; for high-pressure washdown zones, JLS recommends the platform that fits.

Yes. A robotic cartoner automates repetitive carton-loading tasks that have become increasingly difficult to staff, so people can move to higher-value work on the line. The impact depends on line speed and shift schedule, with added value from consistency and ergonomics.

Yes, within the agreed interfaces. JLS cartoning systems are designed to take product from upstream equipment such as flow wrappers and conveyors and hand cartons to downstream equipment such as checkweighers, metal detectors, labeling systems, and case packers. Those interfaces are usually handshake and sensor signals plus the mechanical transfer; JLS engineers its own scope and coordinates the agreed interfaces with the other equipment suppliers, and compatibility is determined by the application.

Often, yes. JLS Flight Lab can test product samples, or a close proxy, subject to project scope and availability. Pre-sale testing establishes feasibility — tooling, pick method, and carton fit — before the design is finalized. Rate and performance are validated during FAT on your system, with final confirmation at commissioning.

Often, yes. The compact footprint of the Peregrine IS — and the Peregrine’s ability to work alongside existing carton equipment — make JLS cartoning well suited to retrofits. The final design depends on available floor space, line speed, controls, sanitation access, and your existing equipment.
