Robotic bakery packaging solutions

Bakery applications — stacking flatbreads and tortillas, and loading bars, cookies, and snack cakes into flow wrappers and cases.

Pain points

Bakery's toughest packaging headaches. Solved.

We've spent decades on food lines. These are the problems bakery processors bring us most — and how JLS robotics solve them.

Fragile baked product handling The challenge

Fragile, crumbly baked product that breaks in handling

How JLS solves it
Vision-guided robots with custom end-of-arm tooling pick fragile and irregular baked items gently and place them with proper orientation — product stays intact through wrapping, tray loading, or cartoning.
Flow wrapper infeed The challenge

Loading a continuously running flow wrapper

How JLS solves it
The Talon FW loads cookies, bars, and baked product into a continuously running flow wrapper at line speed — vision-guided and gentle, with no manual hand-placing.
Throughput and consistency The challenge

Throughput and consistency capped by hand-packing

How JLS solves it
Talon, Peregrine, and Osprey run at line speed with repeatable placement every cycle — from the oven and proofer through wrapping and into the case.
FDA bakery sanitation The challenge

Sanitation and food safety in FDA-regulated bakeries

How JLS solves it
Systems can be specified with hygienic construction matched to the product-contact area and plant environment, including IP69K-rated robots and components and NEMA 4X-rated control enclosures where required — designed to fit FDA-regulated bakery facilities.
Applications

Bakery packaging automation, line to case packing.

From flow wrapping and tray loading through case packing, JLS automates every step of a bakery line — configured for delicate products and your plant’s cleaning requirements.

Have a custom baked product?

If it can be wrapped, trayed, or cartoned, our engineers have probably packed it — and if not, we'll figure it out.

Test before you commit

Send us your baked products.
We'll put them to the test.

Before the design is finalized, send product samples — cookies, bars, croissants, or dough — or a close proxy, subject to project scope and availability. JLS application engineers test tooling, pick method, and pack pattern to establish feasibility; rate is validated during FAT before shipment, with final commissioning completed at your facility.

In an FDA-regulated bakery facility, sanitation is non-negotiable. Every JLS bakery system is engineered for your plant's sanitation environment — from dry, cleanable construction to full washdown where the line requires it — so you stay compliant and downtime stays low.

Bakery packaging automation FAQs.

Common questions about sanitation, tooling, throughput, ROI, and integration.

Most JLS bakery and baked goods packaging projects evaluate payback in the 24–36 month range, depending on labor cost, shift schedule, line speed, uptime improvement, and the specific application. Labor savings scale with the platform, line speed, and labor model, with added value from improved throughput and more consistent baked product handling. JLS reviews your product, package format, line speed, staffing model, and current production challenges to determine where automation creates the strongest return.

JLS automates cookies, crackers, bars, croissants, buns, pastries, and raw and proofed dough — loading product into flow wrappers, trays, cartons, and cases, and feeding continuously running packaging lines.

Vision-guided robots with custom end-of-arm tooling pick fragile and irregular baked items gently and place them with proper orientation, so product stays intact through flow wrapping, tray loading, or cartoning.

Yes. Systems can be specified with washdown-capable, hygienic construction matched to the product-contact area and plant environment, including IP69K-rated robots and components and NEMA 4X-rated control enclosures where required, and designed to fit FDA-regulated bakeries.

Yes. JLS integrates with ovens, proofers, conveyors, flow wrappers, tray sealers, cartoners, case packers, checkweighers, metal detectors, and labeling systems into one coordinated bakery line.

Talon FW feeds continuously running flow wrappers, Talon RD handles raw and proofed dough, and Peregrine loads and cartons finished product in a compact footprint.

It depends on the product and the packaging step. Flow-wrapper loading of cookies, bars and snack cakes runs at the speed the wrapper needs, with robot count sized to match; cartoning and case packing are sized to the upstream rate. Delicate or coated product often sets the practical limit, not the robot — the pick has to stay gentle at speed. JLS sizes the system around your actual product and target rate rather than quoting a generic number.

Changeover between bakery SKUs is recipe-driven through the HMI, with tooling changes designed to be simple and repeatable. Bakery mixes often differ by size and count rather than by product type, which keeps many changeovers to a recipe selection; a move between formats — bars to muffins, for instance — may involve a tooling swap. JLS reviews your SKU mix and changeover frequency so the system is designed around it.

Yes. The Talon FW loads product into a continuously running flow wrapper at line speed, vision-guided and gentle, with no manual hand-placing.

Yes, where the product suits it. Baked goods are exactly the kind of product that needs testing before the design is locked — crumb, coatings, softness and how a snack cake or tortilla stack presents to the robot all vary. JLS tests your product samples in the York, PA Flight Lab with tooling configured for them, to establish the pick method and gentle-handling limits. Samples or a close proxy are tested subject to project scope and availability. It is a feasibility test, not a production-rate run; rate is validated during FAT before shipment, with final commissioning completed at your facility.

Often, yes. The compact footprint of systems like the Peregrine suits retrofits. The final design depends on floor space, line speed, controls, sanitation access, and your existing equipment.

For a bakery quote JLS typically reviews the products and their dimensions, weights and coatings; the wrapper, cartoner or case format each feeds into; target rates; the SKU mix and how often it changes; photos or video of the current line; available floor space; upstream and downstream equipment; and your labor model. Fragility and crumb behavior are worth describing early — they shape the tooling.

Bakery systems are designed, built and programmed at JLS in York, Pennsylvania — the Talon flow-wrapper loaders, the Peregrine and Peregrine IS cartoners, and the Osprey and Hawk case packers all come off the same floor. Support is an in-house team backed by direct access to JLS engineering and controls expertise: remote diagnostics, on-site service, operator training and parts, with tooling for cookies, snack cakes, bars, tortillas, and pastries supported by the in-house team with direct access to JLS engineering and programming expertise.
