JLS builds robotic packaging automation purpose-built for fresh produce — vision-guided systems that load fruits and vegetables into clamshells, trays, bags, and cartons, then case-pack finished packs into retail and foodservice cases. Open-frame stainless steel design, with IP69K-rated components where specified, is built for the washdown of FDA-regulated produce facilities. JLS engineers and programs each system in-house in York, PA, and its in-house support team has direct access to JLS engineering and programming expertise.

Pain points we solve

Fresh produce's toughest
packaging headaches. Solved.

We've spent decades on food lines. These are the problems produce packers bring us most — and how JLS robotics solve them.

Sanitation & washdown The challenge

Sanitation & food safety under constant washdown

How JLS solves it
JLS produce systems can be built with IP69K-rated robots and components, NEMA 4X-rated control enclosures, and open frame stainless, and designed to fit FDA-regulated produce operations — built for the daily washdown these environments require.
Gentle produce handling The challenge

Delicate produce that bruises or damages easily

How JLS solves it
Vision-guided robots with custom end-of-arm tooling handle filled clamshells, tubs, trays, and bags gently and accurately, protecting product quality and presentation.
Seasonal labor challenge The challenge

Labor that's hard to staff through seasonal swings

How JLS solves it
Vision-guided robots take over the repetitive packing positions and run consistently across seasonal volume swings, filling labor gaps when produce demand peaks.
Throughput & line speed The challenge

Throughput & consistency capped by hand-packing

How JLS solves it
Talon, Osprey, and Hawk run at line speed with repeatable placement every cycle — from the sorting and grading line through clamshell loading and into the case.
Applications

Fresh produce packaging automation,
pack to case packing.

From clamshell and tray loading through case packing, JLS automates every step of a produce line — Talon loads your packages, Osprey and Hawk case-pack them, with construction matched to your sanitation program.

Have a custom produce pack?

If your product, pack format, or line doesn't fit the cases above, our application engineers will design, test, and prove the right solution — before you commit.

We'll put it to the test.

Before the design is finalized, send product samples — fruits, vegetables, clamshells, or bagged produce — or a close proxy, subject to project scope and availability. JLS application engineers test tooling, pick method, and pack pattern to establish feasibility; rate is validated during FAT before shipment, with final commissioning completed at your facility.

Designed to get wet. Built to be cleaned.

In an FDA-regulated fresh produce facility, sanitation isn't a feature — it's the whole game. Every JLS fresh produce system is engineered for your plant's sanitation program — with hygienic washdown construction where exposed product requires it and cleanable construction in packaging areas, with IP69K-rated components where the application calls for it — so your line stays compliant and your downtime stays low.

Fresh produce packaging automation FAQs.

Common questions about sanitation, gentle handling, throughput, ROI, and integration.

Pricing is confirmed in the proposal and depends on container format, case pattern and rate. Produce projects are commonly evaluated on a 24–36 month payback range, depending on the line, with a twist most industries do not have: seasonal labor. The case is often built less on year-round headcount and more on the cost and risk of staffing pack-out at harvest peak — recruiting, training and turnover in a compressed window. JLS reviews peak rate, container mix, staffing model and the current pack-out to show where automation pays back.

JLS automates fruits and vegetables in clamshells, bags, trays, and cartons — loaded, grouped, and case-packed into retail and foodservice formats with gentle handling.

Vision-guided robots with custom end-of-arm tooling pick and place filled clamshells, tubs, trays, and bags gently and accurately, protecting product quality and presentation through loading and case packing. Loose produce is evaluated per application.

Yes. Produce operations rinse and wash down frequently, and construction is matched to the application. Osprey case packers are built with cleanable construction — round-tube, sloped stainless steel construction and, where the application calls for it, IP69K-rated robots and components. The Hawk is cleanable construction with IP65-rated components. Wet floors and field debris are normal in a produce pack house, so drainage and access for cleaning are designed in. Systems are designed to fit FDA-regulated produce operations.

Yes. JLS integrates with clamshell denesters and sealers, baggers, tray lines, conveyors, checkweighers, metal detectors, and labeling systems into one coordinated produce line.

Talon loads clamshells, bags, and trays with gentle vision-guided handling, and Osprey case-packs finished packs into cases or master containers.

It depends on the product and format. Tubs, clamshells and rigid containers case-pack at high rates on the Hawk; loose or variable produce sets a lower, gentler ceiling. JLS sizes the system around your actual product, container and target rate — and for seasonal crops, around the peak, not the average. Rate and performance are validated during the project FAT before shipment, with final commissioning completed at your facility.

Changeover between produce SKUs — different tub or clamshell sizes, case counts or pack patterns — is recipe-driven through the HMI, with tooling and format changes designed to be simple and repeatable. Produce operations often switch products by season rather than by shift, so JLS reviews the full year's container range up front and designs tooling to cover as much of it as possible without a swap.

Yes. Flexible tooling and recipe-driven changeover help produce packers handle seasonal volume and SKU changes while keeping consistent throughput when labor is tight.

Yes, where the product suits it. Produce varies by size, weight and firmness within a single lot, so JLS tests representative samples — not the best-looking ones — in the York, PA Flight Lab with tooling configured for the tub, clamshell or container format. The goal is to establish the pick method and bruise risk before the design is finalized. Samples or a close proxy are tested subject to project scope and availability. It is a feasibility test, not a production-rate run; rate is validated during FAT before shipment, with final commissioning completed at your facility.

Often, yes. Produce case packing is usually added downstream of existing filling or tray-sealing equipment. The final design depends on floor space, line speed, how containers present, controls and the case erector and sealer already in place. JLS reviews the full line so the case packer fits the existing flow.

For a produce quote JLS typically reviews the container formats — tub, clamshell, tray — and their dimensions and weights; the case format and pack pattern; target rates at seasonal peak; photos or video of the current line; available floor space; the filler, sealer, case erector and sealer already in place; and your labor model.

Produce systems are designed, built and programmed at JLS in York, Pennsylvania. The Hawk case packers that handle tubs, clamshells and rigid containers, and the Osprey systems behind them, are supported by an in-house team backed by direct access to JLS engineering and controls expertise — remote diagnostics, on-site service, training and parts. For seasonal produce operations, that includes support during the compressed windows when the line cannot afford to be down.
