Proprietary Technology

Better machines start with smarter thinking. Meet the technology inside JLS.

Over 70 years of experience, focused on food today — distilled into proprietary tooling, controls, and design. Multiple U.S. patents, all in food packaging, engineered, programmed, and tested in-house in York, Pennsylvania.

JLS VOB 2.0 Vacuum on Board end-of-arm tooling

Vacuum on Board tooling.

JLS-engineered VOB 2.0 (Vacuum on Board) tooling was designed to pick wet, sticky, slippery, and fragile products — raw proteins, soft cheeses, and more. By generating vacuum right at the tool, VOB 2.0 simplifies tooling plumbing, and its design was optimized using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) through a partnership with Penn State to maximize efficiency.

  • Design optimized using computational fluid dynamics (CFD), in partnership with Penn State
  • Engineered to handle wet, sticky & fragile products
  • Pairs with application-matched 2D or 3D vision
  • Quick-removal tooling supports recipe-driven changeover

More technology you won’t find anywhere else.

JLS technologies developed for food handling and packaging — the innovations that let our engineers solve difficult food-handling applications.

Patent-pending

PBT — positive board transport

Positive board control through forming, in a compact footprint — a patent-pending approach on the Peregrine IS integrated cartoner, with glue application integrated into the JLS cell.

High-speed transport

JLS TRAK

A high-speed transport track with dynamic pitch changes that keeps products precisely spaced at full line speed.

Patent-pending

PCT — positive carton transport

Holds cartons in positive control from forming through loading, reducing drops and jams versus open transport.

Controlled infeed

V-TRACK pick conveyor

Presents product to the robot in a controlled, vision-friendly stream for fast, accurate picking on the Osprey CL.

New — debuting at PACK EXPO 2026

JLS Vision AI

Proprietary AI-driven machine vision that lets JLS robotic systems pick directly from chaotic flow — product that is touching, overlapping, or stacked — without upstream separation equipment. Explore JLS Vision AI →

Verified picking

PIVT pick sensing

Vacuum-pressure pick sensing confirms every pick in real time, for reliable, verified picking.

Patty Hawk

Non-vision delta

A non-vision delta with sensor-based detection and pneumatically actuated mechanical grippers — an IP69K-rated robot for case packing frozen IQF hamburger patty stacks.

2D & 3D vision

Vision-guided robotics

2D and 3D machine vision lets JLS robots find, orient, and place irregular food products at production speed.

Rapid changeover

Design for Agility

Recipe-driven, tool-less changeover so one line can run many SKUs with minimal downtime.

Recognized across the industry.

Manufacturing Innovator Award

Honored for our relentless commitment to innovation, new-product development, and advancing technology in manufacturing.

Best-in-class — Automation & Robotics

Top honors for the Peregrine IS Robotic Cartoning System, recognized as best-in-class for automation and robotics in the baking industry.

We write the software. We back the support. We don’t stop until you’re running.

JLS engineers programming controls and vision software in York, PA

At most automation companies, the controls, vision, and software get farmed out to third-party integrators. Not at JLS. Every line of code — the PLC logic, the machine vision, the HMI your operators touch — is written by JLS engineers in York, PA, on commercially available B&R Automation hardware.

That changes everything for you. When something needs to change, we change it. When you call for support, you reach JLS’s in-house support team, working directly with the people who wrote your software — not a vendor’s vendor. No overseas hand-offs, no finger-pointing, no waiting weeks to get scheduled in. Just one accountable team that knows your system inside and out and can react fast to keep your line running.

And because we own the code, JLS can adapt it when your products, packaging, or SKUs change — scoped as a service engagement, years after install.

  • PLC controls, machine vision & operator HMI — all written by JLS engineers
  • Commercially available B&R Automation hardware — standard, sourceable components
  • In-house support team, with direct access to JLS engineering and programming expertise
  • Faster changes, faster service, one point of accountability
  • Software JLS can adapt as your products change — scoped as a service engagement, years after install

Have a product you need loaded, packed or cartoned?
Start with whether it’s a fit — not with a quote.
Tell an application engineer what you’re packaging and what the line looks like today. A few sentences is enough. If the product suits it, JLS can test it in the Flight Lab before any design is finalized.
