A dozen components, one tray,
zero patience for error.
JLS builds robotic packaging automation purpose-built for ready meals — vision-guided systems that place components into single- and multi-compartment trays, load entrees and meal kits into thermoform and MAP packs, and load finished meal packs into cartons or cases using the appropriate cartoning or case-packing system. IP69K-rated components can be specified for daily washdown in FDA-regulated ready-meals facilities. Every line is engineered, programmed, and supported entirely in-house by JLS. Frozen patties, IQF, and breaded items are covered on the Frozen Foods page.

Ready meals' toughest
packaging headaches. Solved.
We've spent decades on food lines. These are the problems ready meal processors bring us most — and how JLS robotics solve them.
Sanitation & food safety under constant washdown
Delicate, multi-component meals that are hard to place neatly
Labor that's hard to staff for repetitive tray assembly
Throughput & consistency capped by hand-packing
Ready meal packaging automation, component to case packing.
From component placing through case packing, JLS automates every step of a ready meal line — matched to your tray format, product mix, and line speed.

Have a custom ready meal product?
If it can be plated, portioned, or tray-loaded, our engineers have probably packed it — and if not, we'll figure it out.
Test before you commit
Send us your ready meal products.
We'll put them to the test.
Before the design is finalized, send product samples — multi-compartment trays, entrees, bowls, or meal kits — or a close proxy, subject to project scope and availability. JLS application engineers test tooling, pick method, and pack pattern to establish feasibility; rate is validated during FAT before shipment, with final commissioning completed at your facility.
Application Example · JLS Ready Meal Automation
Tray assembly was the bottleneck. JLS freed up the line.
A U.S. food producer replaced manual tray assembly and component placing with JLS vision-guided robotics — improving throughput and presentation consistency while reducing labor on a full-washdown ready-meals line. JLS engineered the system around the plant's actual product, tray formats, and sanitation requirements, and proved it out before final design.

Designed to get wet. Built to be cleaned.
In an FDA-regulated ready-meals facility, sanitation isn't a feature — it's the whole game. Every JLS ready-meals line is engineered for your plant's sanitation program — with hygienic washdown construction where exposed product requires it and cleanable construction in packaging areas, with IP69K-rated components where the application calls for it — so your line stays compliant and your downtime stays low.
* IP69K refers to the ingress-protection rating of selected components (robots, motors, enclosures) specified for an application — not a rating of the complete machine. Contact JLS for your application.

Ready meals packaging automation FAQs.
Pricing is confirmed in the proposal and, for ready meals, depends heavily on scope — a single Talon loading cell prices very differently from an integrated line with vision, flow wrapping, cartoning and case packing. Ready meal projects are commonly evaluated on a 24–36 month payback range, depending on the line, with the case built on labor across multiple stations, consistent presentation of multi-component meals, and the ability to add SKUs without adding people. JLS reviews components, formats, rate and staffing to show where the return is strongest.
JLS automates single- and multi-compartment ready meals, entrees, bowls, and meal kits in foam, MAP, and CPET trays — placing components, loading trays, and case-packing finished meals into cases or cartons.
Vision-guided robots with custom end-of-arm tooling place each component with proper orientation and gentle handling, so portions stay neat and presentation holds through tray loading and case packing.
Yes, matched to each station on the line. Talon primary handling of unwrapped components can be built with IP69K-rated robots and components for washdown; Peregrine cartoning and Osprey case packing, handling sealed trays, use cleanable construction with NEMA 4X-rated control enclosures. Because ready meal lines mix raw-side and sealed-side equipment, JLS matches construction to each zone rather than over- or under-building the whole line. Systems are designed for food plants operating under applicable USDA/FSIS or FDA requirements.
Yes. JLS integrates with tray sealers, thermoformers, conveyors, checkweighers, metal detectors, labeling systems, and your existing upstream and downstream equipment into one coordinated ready meal line.
Talon places components and loads trays, and Osprey case-packs finished trays into cases; Hawk and Peregrine handle cartons and retail-ready cases.
JLS designs tooling and placement to control orientation, spacing, and component layout so each compartment is filled cleanly and the finished meal looks consistent on shelf.
Throughput depends on the product, tray format, robot configuration, and tooling. JLS sizes the system around your actual product, SKU mix, and line speed so it is built for the production requirement rather than a generic rate claim.
Changeover between ready meal SKUs — different components, tray sizes, carton formats and case counts — is recipe-driven through the HMI across the whole integrated line, so one recipe selection changes the loader, the cartoner and the case packer together. Tooling changes, where a format requires them, are designed to be simple and repeatable. JLS reviews your SKU mix and how often it changes so the system fits how the plant runs.
Yes, where the product suits it. Ready meals are multi-component, so a Flight Lab test typically looks at the hardest component first — the item most likely to limit the pick — with tooling configured for it, before the line design is finalized. Samples or a close proxy are tested subject to project scope and availability. It is a feasibility test, not a production-rate run; rate and performance are validated during the project FAT before shipment, with final commissioning completed at your facility. Testing is at JLS's discretion and subject to availability.
Often, yes, though ready meal lines are more often re-laid than single-cell retrofits, because loading, cartoning and case packing all interact. The final design depends on floor space, line speed, the tray sealer or flow wrapper in place, controls and sanitation access. JLS reviews the full line and can phase the work — one cell first, more later — so the plant keeps running.
JLS typically reviews the product and tray type and dimensions, photos or video of the current line, package format, target speeds, SKU mix, labor model, sanitation requirements, available floor space, upstream and downstream equipment, and the main problem to solve.
Ready meal systems are designed, built and programmed at JLS in York, Pennsylvania.
